Ukiah Set to Increase Sanitation Rates by 30% Over the Next 5 Years
Ukiah Valley Sanitation District’s Notice of Public Hearing for consideration of sanitation rate changes.
The Ukiah Valley Sanitation District (UVSD) is holding a regularly scheduled hearing on proposed sewer rate increase. This proposal would increase sanitation rates by 30% for those that receive sewer service from the UVSD. The UVSD serves almost 3,000 residents and businesses across the Ukiah Valley, many of which reside within the City of Ukiah’s boundary and would include almost all of the planned annexed areas.
The need for this rate raise is due, according to a notice of public hearing from the UVSD, to “debt financing of sewer infrastructure.” This increase is due to “adequate and responsible support for the cost of the District's operation and maintenance.”
With the City of Ukiah planning on tripling the size of the city limits, it’s important that they consider their ability to take in new residents without increasing prices, fees, and rates on critical infrastructure. With the increase in sanitation rates, as well as higher business licensing fees in the city compared to the county, how can the City ensure that this annexation does not put a further burden on annexed residents?
Residents in the annexed areas have been clear in their opposition to the City’s plan for annexation. However, the city is still on track to pursue this proposal in direct opposition to what residents want. Residents in the Millview and Willow Creek area purposefully chose to live outside of the city limits because they didn’t want to deal with the increased city taxes and burdens.
